The Napier Commission at Inverness

Continuing the transcription of the Report from the Napier Commission, 1883, I came across two contrasting pieces of evidence. The first, by factor Roderick Maclean of Ardross (aged 54), had his own observations on the causes for the state of the average Highlander at the time:

41578. [...] I attribute to intermittent labour, and to a certain extent climatic lassitude, the cause of the laziness of which the west coast Highlanders are accused. I have observed that away from home and among working people they become excellent workers, but on their return to their homes they become infected by the indolent surroundings, and especially during the winter months, inactivity is a matter of course with them. If however, taken in hand when young, and kept in regular employment even at their homes, better workmen, circumstances considered, could not be desired. Uneducated Highlanders have a strong attachment to localities, and hence their antipathy to emigration; in many instances they would rather suffer starvation than leave their homes even for a season's work, but the world knows what educated Highlanders abroad are. Education therefore, with more zeal, is one of the principal requirements to elevate them from their present impoverished condition. It would be a great blessing to many of the poor women to have lady missionaries (though difficult to accomplish) sent among them to give them instruction in the training of their families and in domestic economy. As a result of improper training, one painfully experiences in business one-sided statements, probably unwittingly, given as facts, and I believe it is by influences such as the above they could best be got at to practise the duties belonging to their several relations and stations. The well-regulated families among them are easily distinguished and pleasant to deal with. Highlanders are naturally imitative, and are more apt to follow leaders either for good or for evil than to think for themselves.

The family connection

I had the pleasure to speak to a relative of one of the victims of the Great War today. The victim was John Macaulay, 7 Islivig. What shone through was the impact that the death had on the man's wife - devastating in a word. She would never speak of him or their marriage after his death. They were to have wed in Canada, where he was working with the RCMP, but instead he joined the RNR during the war. They got married in Stornoway; only months later his ship was torpedoed in the Irish Sea. The majority of the crew were lost, partly as a result of poor weather at the time. John Macaulay was washed up on a beach just north of Dublin, and was buried at Balrothery, Co Dublin.

John Macdonald Smith, 3 Keith Street, Stornoway, fell in action on the Western Front on 12 May 1916. The news of his death was conveyed to his father, Kenneth, at Kilmeny in Islay. Rev Kenneth Smith was active in Argyll in the early years of the 20th century, and "Fasti ecclesiæ scoticanæ" led me on the path of his career in the Free Church of Scotland.

In 1906, he was appointed to the Presbytery of Sandbank, Strachur and Strathlachlan. Kenneth was demitted in 1911, to become a Free Church Minister in Greenock; afterwards he became minister of Oa (Islay). Initially, I thought I was on the wrong track, and was prepared to abandon this bit of research. But Fasti Ecclesiæ scoticanæ helped me out once more.

KENNETH SMITH, born Lochs, Lewis, 24th Aug. 1862, son of Alexander S. and Christina Montgomery. Educated at Free Church Academy, Stornoway;
Appointed lay missionary at Kenmore, May 1900, and at Dalavich in 1903;
Licensed as lay evangelist in 1905 ; admitted to Gaelic Chapel, Rothesay ;
Ordained by Free Church Presbytery of Glasgow to Free Church, Greenock, 30th Jan. 1912;
Transferred to Oa 9th May 1917;
Transferred and admitted to Kilmeny 12th March 1918.

Married on 15th December 1885 to Sophia Christina, daughter of John Macdonald, and has issue:

Margaret Adam, born 18th Jan. 1887 (married on 10th December 1920, John Thomas Lloyd, B.A., Kalimpong);

Isabella, born 25th August 1888 ;

John Macdonald, divinity student, lieut. 10th Scottish Rifles, born 20th May 1890, fell in action in France, 12th May 1916 ;

Armed with this information, we can now trace his progression across Scotland, using the censuses.

In 1901, we find him at Carwhin Manse, Killin, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th of his six children;

In 1891, he is a tailor at 3 Keith Street, Stornoway, where he is living with his wife and the eldest three of his children.

In 1881, we find a tenuous reference to him at 5 Imersligach, Lochs, Lewis, where he is a boarder, apprentice tailor, in a household of the Montgomery family. Imersligach is nowadays known as Shell Street, Stornoway.

In 1871, Kenneth is displayed an an 8-year old crofter's son with his parents Alexander and Cersty (a corruption of Christina), aged 47 and 40 as well as his siblings Mary (16), John (13), Catherine (11), Isabella (5) and Kenneth (1).

Kenneth Smith died on 5 April 1929, aged 66, at 75 Clepington Road, Dundee. His usual residence is quoted as the Manse, Duror, Argyll. The cause of death is given as malignancy, which had necessitated an operation to the face; and pulmonary congestion for two days. The death was reported by his son, Roderick John, who is reported as working for the National Bank. He is quoted in the listing above as a bank clerk.

Innkeepers at Stornoway

Fellow researcher Direcleit has compiled an extensive listing of occupations and persons at Stornoway, as revealed by the census returns of 1841 through 1901. Innkeepers did not feature, but one crossed my look-ups today, as I tried to find more information about WW1 casualties.

In 1851, we find Daniel Murray, aged 35, and married to Grace (28). He is an innkeeper on South Beach, as well as a tidewaiter. A tidewaiter is an obsolete term for a customs officer who boarded and inspected incoming ships. Whether this was actually compatible with his other occupation is something that I cannot really comment upon. Sharing his household is Hector Lees, aged 76, uncle, and pilot. Robert D Walker is a shipmaster, aged 27, from England. Marion Macleod, 21, was a house servant.

Alexanderina Tweedie, aged 49, is an innkeeper at South Beach Lane. She is living with her daughters Christina and Margaret.

In 1861 we find four references to innkeepers.
Robert Colthart, 36, from Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire, is an innkeeper on South Beach.

George Mackenzie, 63, from Gairloch, Ross-shire, is a retired innkeeper, on South Beach. He lives with his wife Mary (45) and three young grandchildren.

Don Mciver, 57, is an innkeeper at 22 Kenneth Street, living with his wife Jane (50) and five children, aged 11 to 26 (John, Barbara and Jane, William and Mary).

Grace Murray (38) now appears at 10 Francis Street, the sister of shipping agent Daniel Macalister and his siblings. Grace is marked as a former innkeeper.

Alexanderina Tweedie (52) now is an innkeeper on Point Street, living with her sister and family.

Charles Johnson, 48, is originally from England, who is an innkeeper at 13 North Beach. He has a family of 6 children, with his wife Isabella. Others present are domestic servants as well as his father.

Jean Maciver, 60, is an innkeeper at 38-39 Kenneth Street. Intriguingly, her son John (35) is a former gold digger.

Ann Mackenzie, 57, is innkeeper at 41 Bayhead Street, who has two daughters.

Alexanderina Tweedie appears here as a former innkeeper, now aged 75, on James Street. She is living with her daughter Christina Mcaulay (40), who is a grocer, and her 5 children.

John Mciver, 46, is now the innkeeper at 38 Kenneth Street.

In 1891, John Mciver is marked as a retired innkeeper at 64 Kenneth Street. He lives with his siblings Jane and William; the latter is a commission agent.

As shown above, Alexanderina Tweedie appears to have been a constant presence in Stornoway, and a quick search shows she is also in the town in 1841, marked at Francis Street. The 1841 census does not specify occupations. Alexanderina, daughter of Malcolm and Christine Macleod (nee Maciver), passed away on 21 October 1887, at the age of 82. She was the widow of Alexander Tweedie.

Tasglann nan Eilean contacted me earlier this week regarding a wargrave of a German U-boat engineer on the Monach Isles. This appears to be a recurring query with them. The bronze plaque commemorates Otto W Schatt, who was 31 when his U-boat 110 was sunk by Royal Navy vessels off Malin Head in 1918. Three crewmen drifted north on the currents of the North Atlantic and washed up on Heisker. Only Otto Schatt still had his ID badge on his person; the others could no longer be identified.

In 1901, the census shows enumeration district 8 as being Heisker (sic), with a population of 106. Eight of these were lighthouse keepers and their families and attendants. Nearly a hundred others, spread over 14 households, were the resident population. These are the population numbers in the second half of the 19th century.

The Greenfield connection

One of the Stornoway casualties of the First World War was Lieutenant Benjamin Greenfield, who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force until the end of hostilities. The Stornoway Gazette of Friday 6 December 1918 takes up the story.

Lewismen throughout the world will regret the death of Lieut. Benjamin Greenfield, son of the late Rev James Greenfield, Stornoway. The sad event took place in the house of his brother-in-law, Mr J. W. Galloway, Thurso, on the evening of 28 November 1918. On the previous Thursday, he arrive on short leave from France. The cause of death was pneumonia following influenza and this Monday he was buried with military honours at Thurso. There have been countless tragic instances in this war and that of young Greenfield, who went through the battlefields of Africa and France, that he should after all cross the bourne when on a flying visit to his sister in the Far North, after the conflict on the battlefield ceased, would almost occur as striking a form of tragedy too fell to be recorded.

Benjamin was the son of Free Church minister James Greenfield, who gave evidence to the Napier Commission at Stornoway in June 1883. Benjamin appears in the 1891 census, aged 6, as the youngest of five children, these being Maggy J (19), Ellen M (12), John K (11) and Michael Willis (10).

Yesterday, it was 59 years ago since the Clan Macquarrie ran aground at Borve. All its crew were saved from the vessel thanks to the breeches buoy.

The hurricane force winds that drove the Clan Macquarrie on the rocks at Borve also blew out the window and frame of a house in Barvas, and is rumoured to have demolished the water tank for that village.

The storm brought catastrophic flooding to southern parts of England and southwestern Holland, claiming 300 lives in England and 2000 in Holland. A further 133 lives were lost in the North Channel, when the MV Princess Victoria was sunk, en route from Stranraer to Larne. The total death toll stands at 2554.

The grave of the bibles

Six years ago this year, the community of Ness buried nearly five hundred old bibles in the St Peter's Cemetery in the Swainbost machair. The bibles came from the charity shop in Lionel, where it had been decided that the books were unfit for resale. Most of them were very old and falling apart. However, it was decided that the Holy Scriptures deserved a more respectful end than the shredder or the incinerator. Also, many of them were family bibles, that had been in use for generations, and were held to be treasured possessions. They were all placed in a box, and interred in the Old Cemetery. A proper burial service was conducted by the minister at Cross, on 30 June 2006. This memorial plaque was erected over the grave.

Murdo is shown in the 1901 census with his mother Catherine (32), and siblings Barbara (14), Johan (4), Peggy and Robert Rory (aged 1). Catherine is a fisherman's widow; she lost her husband Robert on 7 May 1900 at the age of 40, as a result of consumption of the lungs, which had affected him for 6 months. Robert Montgomery was known as Ruadh and lived at 17 Cromore.Catherine (nee Macleod) originated from 28 Cromore.

It is worth noting that another WW1 victim has connections to 28 Cromore: William Bruce. He was a schoolmaster's son, as previously recorded on this blog.

During my recent perusal of personnel records of the Australian Imperial Forces in the First World War, I happened across several servicemen who are not mentioned in Loyal Lewis Roll of Honour 1914-1918. They were:

Archibald Matheson Mccallum was born on 30 August 1896 to Archibald Mccallum and Elizabeth Matheson. Archibald Sr was schoolmaster at Balallan, but moved away from Lewis in 1898. Archibald Jr joined the Australian Imperial Forces in 1915, and served in France until 1917, when he was discharged due to severe thyroid problems. Archibald Jr returned to Australia, where he lived until his death in 1959 (or thereabouts).

Archibald Sr is quoted as having two children (DJ and Christina), but it would appear that Archibald Jr is in fact a third child.

William Arthur Bawden was born on 10 February 1895, a son of Samuel and Sarah Ann of Cromwell Street, Stornoway. Samuel Bawden was a Coastguard. His son emigrated to Australia, and signed up for the AIF on 3 April 1915 at Rainbow in the state of Victoria. He was a farm labourer, later munitions worker. William saw active service, but developed pneumonia during the autumn of 1917. This left him permanently incapacitated, and he was repatriated to Australia in February 1918. In spite of his poor physical condition, William tried to sign up again in August 1918, but was turned down.

He died on 5 September 1920 at the age of 25, having hanged himself. The magisterial inquiry showed that no indication of his state of mind was evident beforehand. We shall never know what did prompt William to take his own life.

His death was not attributable to his war service, but that does not mean we will forget his valiant contribution.

Murdoch Mackenzie, was the son of John Mackenzie of 36 Eoropie. Murdoch joined up at Claremont, Tasmania, Australia, on 15 June 1916. He was sent to Europe two months later and saw action with the 15th battalion Australian Imperial Forces. He was wounded in action on 23 August 1918. After peace was declared, he returned to Australia and was discharged, medically unfit, on 23 July 1919.

Murdoch was the brother of Donald and Dugald; the latter was killed in action in 1915.

This engraved stone caught my eye last Sunday afternoon during a walk through the Newton area of Stornoway. After putting the question on Twitter, I got a reply through the kind intervention of Donald Macsween, from Malcolm Macdonald of the Stornoway Historical Society and local historian Sandy Matheson.

This refers to the Admiralty feus for the houses on Seaview Terrace. These included Caberfeidh Buildings as well as the RNR houses. The feu charters are dated 1888 and included what we knew as the Coast Guard houses as well as 2 and 4 on the corner with Seaview Terrace and Battery Road where Colin Ossian [Colin Macaskill, ADB] and his parents lived as tenants of the Stornoway Trust. These two houses were of a better design and quality than the ones further east and were presumably for senior ranks. They were demolished circa 1969 by Stornoway Town Council and new houses erected on the site. The semi-detached houses on Battery Road where Robin Mackenzie’s family lived and the one north of that occupied by Jimmy? Bruce were also Admiralty Houses but of a later date and subject to me viewing them when the weather is better they too have the Anchor emblem on them.

The Seaview Terrace houses on the left as you leave Newton were built for a combination of HM Coastguard and the Royal Naval Reserve Battery where the Power Station is now. In 1919, on the closure of the RNR Battery the houses all became Coastguard Houses. The two semi-detached houses on Battery Road and the corner site on Seaview Terrace are occupied by more modern Council-style houses.

Archibald Matheson Mccallum was born on 30 August 1896 to Archibald Mccallum and Elizabeth Matheson. Archibald Sr was schoolmaster at Balallan, but moved away from Lewis in 1898. Archibald Jr joined the Australian Imperial Forces in 1915, and served in France until 1917, when he was discharged due to severe thyroid problems. Archibald Jr returned to Australia, where he lived until his death in 1959 (or thereabouts).

Archibald Sr is quoted as having two children (DJ and Christina), but it would appear that Archibald Jr is in fact a third child.

William Arthur Bawden, referred to in the previous post, does not qualify for a CWGC war grave. He died on 5 September 1920 at the age of 25, having hanged himself. The magisterial inquiry showed that no indication of his state of mind was evident beforehand. We shall never know what did prompt William to take his own life.

His death was not attributable to his war service, but that does not mean we will forget his valiant contribution.

Not in Roll of Honour - Stornoway

On 10 February 1895, William Arthur Bawden was born to Samuel and Sarah Ann of Cromwell Street, Stornoway. Samuel Bawden was a Coastguard. His son emigrated to Australia, and signed up for the AIF on 3 April 1915 at Rainbow in the state of Victoria. He was a farm labourer, later munitions worker. William saw active service, but developed pneumonia during the autumn of 1917. This left him permanently incapacitated, and he was repatriated to Australia in February 1918. In spite of his poor physical condition, William tried to sign up again in August 1918, but was turned down. He died in 1920 - presumably (but not confirmed) of his illness. If I manage to trace his death record, it will give me confirmation of the cause of death and thereby whether this was service related. If this turns out to be the case, William Bawden may be entered on the CWGC records.

For now, I remember him for his service to King and Country between 1915 and 1918.

Iolaire orphan dies

Marion Macleod, aged 97, has passed away at the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway. Mor, born in 1914, would recall the scenes when news of her father's death reached her native village of Earshader, just south of the present-day bridge to Great Bernera. I leave it to the article in Hebrides News for a proper appreciation of her long life.

The Iolaire was the ship which foundered just outside Stornoway Harbour on 1 January 1919, carrying 300 passengers and crew. The passengers were all naval ratings from Lewis and Harris, returning home following the Armistice six weeks before. Of these, 205 drowned, in spite of being just a few dozen yards from shore. The strong swell and winds prevented many from reaching safety. Of those lost, more than 60 were never found. The Iolaire Disaster is one of the worst peace-time maritime disasters in British waters - but is very little known outside Lewis. The grief that this tragedy caused was a private grief, and not readily discussed to this day.

Not in Roll of Honour - Eoropie

A chance search turned up another serviceman from Lewis, who had seen action during the First World War. His name is not on the Roll of Honour for his village, Eoropie.

Murdoch Mackenzie, a 34-year old sailor, joined up at Claremont, Tasmania, Australia, on 15 June 1916. He was sent to Europe two months later and saw action with the 15th battalion Australian Imperial Forces. He was wounded in action on 23 August 1918. After peace was declared, he returned to Australia and was discharged, medically unfit, on 23 July 1919.

Murdoch was the brother of Donald and Dugald; the latter was killed in action in 1915. His father was John Mackenzie of 36 Eoropie.

I am currently researching those men from Lewis who served in the First World War from Australia. One of them survived the ordeal and returned to Australia after being discharged as medically unfit. After the end of the war, he received his King's certificate to say he had served in the Great War. The man involved subsequently moved house, and in the usual clear-up at such a time burned some papers. One of those (gulp) was his King's Certificate. He promptly applied for a replacement - which was sent out to him. Can you imagine what that must have been like for him? I couldn't.

The Iolaire story

This is the full story, as told in five parts between 7.30pm on December 31st and 9.10 am on January 1st.

It is Hogmanay 1918, and the war has been over for seven weeks. Survivors from the Western Front and the war at sea are flocking home. As are hundreds of sailors from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Three trains pull into the harbourside station at Kyle of Lochalsh, and hundreds pour onto the platform and adjoining quayside to join a ferry home. The Skye men can take the short hop to Kyleakin, or join the steamer north to Portree. The sailors and soldiers from the Outer Hebrides have a longer journey ahead of them.

The mailsteamer for Stornoway, the Sheila is alongside at Kyle, but it very rapidly becomes clear that she has nowhere near enough space to accommodate the hundreds that want to go home to Lewis and Harris. So, a cable is sent to the naval base at Stornoway, and Rear Admiral Boyle sends HMY Iolaire to Kyle to relieve the congestion. Iolaire, the former private steamyacht Amalthea arrives in the early evening, bumping into the pier as she docks.

A disorganised scramble occurs, where the throng of men divides between the Sheila and the Iolaire. No record is kept as to who goes on board which vessel. Some start off by boarding the Iolaire, then switch to the Sheila. Others do the reverse swap. Finally, at half past seven, Iolaire casts off and heads north. The Sheila follows suit in short order.

The year 1918 is drawing to a close and Big Ben in London is about to start striking the midnight hour. Six hundred miles to the north, HMY Iolaire is ploughing her way north through the Minch, passing between Raasay, Rona and the Scottish mainland. The weather, which had been reasonable upon departure from Kyle, is turning increasingly windy. A heavy swell is beginning to rise in response to the strong southerly wind. The lighthouses, which serve as reference points for mariners in the Minch, blink their messages to Iolaire. Milaid, on the rocky cliffs near Kebock Head; Rona; Tiumpan Head on the eastern extremity of the Point Peninsula; and Arnish, near the entrance to Stornoway Harbour.

In dozens of houses in Lewis, glasses are charged to the New Year. The last year of war is ending.
Dry clothes are draped over beds, a stew is heating over the fire. In the blackhouses in Ness, and the town houses of Stornoway. A kettle is at the ready on the stove. A plate, cutlery and cups on the table. From Eoropie to Brenish, from Lemreway to North Tolsta, and between Manor Park and Newton, the same scene is repeated over and over. Only two hours to go, the boat won't make Hogmanay. But it does not really matter, the boys will be home soon.

The clock strikes midnight. It is 1919.

Conditions in the Minch are now poor, and all on board Iolaire are glad that the journey is nearly over. The passengers, most of them familiar with the passage to Stornoway, are snoozing their way, lulled to slumber by the steady if roughish motion of the waves that Iolaire rides. The captain goes down below to rest, his second-in-command takes over on the bridge. A fishing boat is also on its way home to Stornoway, and is running a broadly parallel course to Iolaire.

The passengers can now see the lights of Stornoway ahead, as well as the familiar signal of the Arnish Lighthouse and its secondary beacon. All begin to stir and start to prepare for disembarkation, which is now only about a quarter of or half an hour away. But all is not well. The sound of waves striking shore becomes audible over the noise of wind and swell.

The next noise is a far greater one. Iolaire changes course abruptly, as the crew realise they have overshot the harbour entrance. But it is too late. At 1.55 am, the ship comes to a crashing halt on the rocks of the Beasts of Holm.

Iolaire was mortally damaged by her grounding, and would eventually slip from the rocks and sink into the depths beside the Beasts of Holm. Only her mast would be left showing above the waves.

Flares were let off, which were spotted by the fishing boat and the Sheila, which were running into Stornoway behind Iolaire. Conditions, however, were too severe for any direct help to be offered by any vessel, as they would place themselves into severe danger. One intrepid man managed to bring a hawser ashore, which was to become a literal lifeline for nearly four dozen souls. Others attempted to use the lifeboats, which were almost immediately swamped by the heavy swell, or smashed on the rocks nearby. For Iolaire only grounded about 50 yards from shore. Those who jumped into the sea drowned almost at once, or were smashed onto the rocks, left lifeless. A life-saving apparatus, a breeches' buoy, which had been brought from Stornoway, came way too late to be useful.

Some of those that survived made their way to Stoneyfield Farm, about half a mile from the scene of Iolaire's sinking, and their terrible news was relayed to Stornoway. The flares had been spotted from the town, but had been (mis)taken for celebratory rockets.

The houses waited. The stew over the fire, the teapot on the stove. The clothes on the bed, and the made up table. The families, friends and other islanders waited. Then news filtered through into, and from Stornoway. The Iolaire was lost. Several dozen had been saved. But so many more were not. A night of terrifying uncertainty drew on. Would he be among the saved?

It is early January, and daylight is still many hours away.

It is just after 9 o'clock, and the sun rises over the mountains of mainland Scotland. One hundred and forty bobbed on the tide, lost in the Iolaire. Those that could be retrieved were taken to the naval base at the Battery in Stornoway, to be identified and collected by family.

Those who had not yet had news of the tragedy would soon receive it, as elders of the church went round, the bearers of the news of loss. A brother, a father. An uncle, a nephew. A son, a cousin. No village was spared. No family who was not directly or indirectly affected. The stories abound, but are not readily told.

It is 2012, and dawn has broken on a new year. Three years ago, several hundred gathered at the little memorial at Holm Point to remember. It was a beautiful mild winter's day, with not a breath of wind. We looked south, across the Minch, where the jagged humps of the Shiants, the distant lines of Skye, and on a day of exceptional clarity, even the hills behind Kyle can be made out, 75 miles away. In this day and age, a short journey. In 1919, a journey that was never completed by two hundred and five souls.

The exact cause for the foundering of HMY Iolaire has never been fully cleared up, and theories abound. There are accusations of a cover-up by the Royal Navy, drunkenness on the part of the crew, and speculation on the factors played by the weather. It is not the object of this blog to apportion blame, or determine the exact cause for the tragedy. This is a tribute to the two hundred and five who perished at the Beasts of Holm that New Year's night in 1919.

Iolaire was mortally damaged by her grounding, and would eventually slip from the rocks and sink into the depths beside the Beasts of Holm. Only her mast would be left showing above the waves.

Flares were let off, which were spotted by the fishing boat and the Sheila, which were running into Stornoway behind Iolaire. Conditions, however, were too severe for any direct help to be offered by any vessel, as they would place themselves into severe danger. One intrepid man managed to bring a hawser ashore, which was to become a literal lifeline for nearly four dozen souls. Others attempted to use the lifeboats, which were almost immediately swamped by the heavy swell, or smashed on the rocks nearby. For Iolaire only grounded about 50 yards from shore. Those who jumped into the sea drowned almost at once, or were smashed onto the rocks, left lifeless. A life-saving apparatus, a breeches' buoy, which had been brought from Stornoway, came way too late to be useful.

Some of those that survived made their way to Stoneyfield Farm, about half a mile from the scene of Iolaire's sinking, and their terrible news was relayed to Stornoway. The flares had been spotted from the town, but had been (mis)taken for celebratory rockets.

The houses waited. The stew over the fire, the teapot on the stove. The clothes on the bed, and the made up table. The families, friends and other islanders waited. Then news filtered through into, and from Stornoway. The Iolaire was lost. Several dozen had been saved. But so many more were not. A night of terrifying uncertainty drew on. Would he be among the saved?

It is early January, and daylight is still many hours away.

Conditions in the Minch are now poor, and all on board Iolaire are glad that the journey is nearly over. The passengers, most of them familiar with the passage to Stornoway, are snoozing their way, lulled to slumber by the steady if roughish motion of the waves that Iolaire rides. The captain goes down below to rest, his second-in-command takes over on the bridge. A fishing boat is also on its way home to Stornoway, and is running a broadly parallel course to Iolaire.

The passengers can now see the lights of Stornoway ahead, as well as the familiar signal of the Arnish Lighthouse and its secondary beacon. All begin to stir and start to prepare for disembarkation, which is now only about a quarter of or half an hour away. But all is not well. The sound of waves striking shore becomes audible over the noise of wind and swell.

The next noise is a far greater one. Iolaire changes course abruptly, as the crew realise they have overshot the harbour entrance. But it is too late. At 1.55 am, the ship comes to a crashing halt on the rocks of the Beasts of Holm.

The year 1918 is drawing to a close and Big Ben in London is about to start striking the midnight hour. Six hundred miles to the north, HMY Iolaire is ploughing her way north through the Minch, passing between Raasay, Rona and the Scottish mainland. The weather, which had been reasonable upon departure from Kyle, is turning increasingly windy. A heavy swell is beginning to rise in response to the strong southerly wind. The lighthouses, which serve as reference points for mariners in the Minch, blink their messages to Iolaire. Milaid, on the rocky cliffs near Kebock Head; Rona; Tiumpan Head on the eastern extremity of the Point Peninsula; and Arnish, near the entrance to Stornoway Harbour.

In dozens of houses in Lewis, glasses are charged to the New Year. The last year of war is ending.
Dry clothes are draped over beds, a stew is heating over the fire. In the blackhouses in Ness, and the town houses of Stornoway. A kettle is at the ready on the stove. A plate, cutlery and cups on the table. From Eoropie to Brenish, from Lemreway to North Tolsta, and between Manor Park and Newton, the same scene is repeated over and over. Only two hours to go, the boat won't make Hogmanay. But it does not really matter, the boys will be home soon.

The clock strikes midnight. It is 1919.

It is Hogmanay 1918, and the war has been over for seven weeks. Survivors from the Western Front and the war at sea are flocking home. As are hundreds of sailors from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Three trains pull into the harbourside station at Kyle of Lochalsh, and hundreds pour onto the platform and adjoining quayside to join a ferry home. The Skye men can take the short hop to Kyleakin, or join the steamer north to Portree. The sailors and soldiers from the Outer Hebrides have a longer journey ahead of them.

The mailsteamer for Stornoway, the Sheila is alongside at Kyle, but it very rapidly becomes clear that she has nowhere near enough space to accommodate the hundreds that want to go home to Lewis and Harris. So, a cable is sent to the naval base at Stornoway, and Rear Admiral Boyle sends HMY Iolaire to Kyle to relieve the congestion. Iolaire, the former private steamyacht Amalthea arrives in the early evening, bumping into the pier as she docks.

A disorganised scramble occurs, where the throng of men divides between the Sheila and the Iolaire. No record is kept as to who goes on board which vessel. Some start off by boarding the Iolaire, then switch to the Sheila. Others do the reverse swap. Finally, at half past seven, Iolaire casts off and heads north. The Sheila follows suit in short order.

Ascension Island is a remote outpost in the southern Atlantic Ocean, and its New Cemetery contains six Commonwealth burials of the First World War, and two from the Second.

What is a Krooman? It is an ex-slave, rescued from West Africa during the 19th century and locally recruited into the Royal Navy (according to Wikipedia). The Kroo were (are?) a tribe from the Kroo area of Liberia and the adjacent coast who had been regularly employed by the Royal Navy onboard ship for a considerable period pre-WW1. The term Krooman denoted both a member of the tribe and was also used as an official rank by the RN (krooman, head Krooman etc.). It was common for the RN to use local labour on various stations around the world to supplement the regular ships complement - another example would be a Seedie on the Singapore Station. They were entitled to medals although frequently missed out on their awards due to their transient status (they couldn't be employed on continuous service, but had to keep signing up onto a new vessel each time a ship paid off - much like the old RN system).

Who was John Smith? I cannot find anything at all about him. Posting this on a blog, related to another remote island, I hope there are people out there who remember him. If not, at least we do.
